Kiwengwa, Nungwi or Paje: which coast to choose

Not all of Zanzibar's beaches are alike. Tides, swimming, atmosphere and activities: the coast you choose shapes your whole stay. Here is a comparison of the main areas to help you decide where to set down your bags.

01

Kiwengwa, the balance of the north-east coast

Kiwengwa brings together one of the island's finest lagoons, fine white sand and a handful of large beach resorts for services and activities. The tides here are pronounced, giving you a different landscape every day.

It is the sweet spot for anyone who wants the beach and the excursions without the bustle, with a genuine, authentic village nearby and a central position for reaching the rest of the island.

02

Nungwi and Kendwa, in the north

At the northern tip, Nungwi and Kendwa have the advantage of being far less affected by the tides: you can swim at any hour. Nungwi is lively, with nightlife and plenty of restaurants; neighbouring Kendwa is a little quieter.

This is the ideal area if round-the-clock swimming and atmosphere are your priorities.

03

Paje and Jambiani, in the east

On the east coast, Paje and Jambiani are kitesurfing country, driven by steady winds and a vast lagoon. The tides here are spectacular: the sea retreats a long way, revealing an immense expanse of sand.

The mood is laid-back, younger in Paje and more village-like in Jambiani. Perfect for board sports and for anyone who loves wide-open space.
