Kiwengwa beach in Zanzibar: white sand, a turquoise lagoon and a traditional dhow

Guide

What to do in Zanzibar from Kiwengwa

Zanzibar is far more than its postcard beaches. From Kiwengwa, on the north-east coast, the island's finest sites are all within easy reach: coral reefs, sandbanks, tropical forest, spice plantations and a World Heritage old town. Here are the activities worth the trip and how to arrange them at your own pace from a private villa.

01

The sea: snorkelling, dhows and dolphins

Sheltered by the coral reef, the Kiwengwa lagoon is perfect for snorkelling and swimming in calm water. A trip aboard a traditional dhow takes you out to the sandbanks that surface at low tide and to the best diving spots, alive with colourful fish, turtles and the occasional ray.

Further south, at Kizimkazi, you set off early in the morning to swim with dolphins. Keen scuba divers will also find beautiful drop-offs off Mnemba, the island's most celebrated atoll.

02

Nature and culture: Jozani, spices and Stone Town

Inland, Jozani Forest is home to the red colobus, a monkey species found only in Zanzibar, which you can watch along shaded trails and a raised mangrove boardwalk.

The spice farms are a reminder of why Zanzibar earned its nickname as the Spice Island: clove, vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg all reveal themselves on a guided tour. Finally, Stone Town, the World Heritage old town, is easily explored in a day: narrow lanes, the market, historic houses and the seafront.

03

Organising it all from the villa

Staying in Kiwengwa means having a central base: most excursions are reached by car, and the villa's house manager helps you shape each day around what you feel like doing, book trusted operators and set departure times around the tides.

Allow at least a week so you can alternate between lazing by the pool, beach days and two or three excursions without rushing. Families particularly enjoy having a quiet home to return to between outings.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need to visit Zanzibar?
A week is a comfortable pace: a few days of beach and pool time, plus two or three excursions (a dhow trip, Jozani or a spice farm, Stone Town). Ten days let you add diving or the dolphins without any rush.
Which excursions work well for families?
The dhow trip out to the sandbanks, Jozani Forest and a spice farm all go down well with children. Snorkelling in the calm lagoon is suitable from a young age with supervision.
Can everything be booked once you arrive?
Yes. From the villa, the house manager arranges transfers and books excursions with trusted operators, taking the weather and the tides into account.
